Legal & compliance
What does verified mean?
Verification exists to make private rentals safer and more transparent. It is a limited set of checks carried out at a point in time — not a guarantee. Here is precisely what each badge does and does not mean.
Draft document — not yet legally reviewed
This document is a working draft and has not yet been reviewed by a South African legal or compliance professional. Publishing these pages does not on its own make the business compliant with POPIA, PAIA, ECTA or the CPA.
1. The three verification levels
Identity Verified
What it means: The landlord uploaded a copy of a South African ID document or passport and a member of our team checked it manually against the name on the account. There is no automated or third-party ID check.
What it does not mean: It is not a credit check, criminal check or confirmation that the person owns the property.
Contact Verified
What it means: The email address on the account was confirmed through the confirmation link sent at registration, and contact details were reviewed with the identity documents.
What it does not mean: It does not confirm who the person is, or that they will respond or behave honestly.
Property Verified
What it means: One document linking the landlord to a property — a municipal rates statement, title deed or signed owner's authority/mandate — was uploaded and reviewed manually by our team.
What it does not mean: It is not an inspection of the property, a valuation, a compliance certificate, or a guarantee of condition, legality or availability.
2. Statuses you will see
- Unverified — nothing has been submitted or reviewed for that check.
- Pending — documents were submitted and our team is reviewing them. No badge is shown publicly while a check is pending.
- Rejected — the documents could not be approved. The landlord is told the reason and may submit new documents.
- Verified — the specific check described above was completed.
Landlords cannot award themselves a verified status. Verification is set only by the Rent Direct Hub team after review, and can be withdrawn at any time.
3. No guarantee
A verification badge is not an endorsement, warranty or recommendation. Rent Direct Hub does not guarantee any person, property, listing, lease or transaction, and is not a party to any agreement between a landlord and a tenant.
4. Stay safe when renting directly
- Always view the property in person before paying anything.
- Confirm the landlord's identity and their right to let the property.
- Never pay a deposit or 'holding fee' into an account before you have seen the property and signed a written lease.
- Use a written lease that complies with the Rental Housing Act, and keep proof of every payment.
- Be cautious of prices far below the market, pressure to pay quickly, or a landlord who refuses a viewing.
- Report suspicious listings to us so we can investigate and remove them.
